Volleyball Season Returns Despite COVID-19

Volleyball has returned for the 2020 school year. Due to COVID-19 things will be different, but there is still a season.

The varsity team started out the pre-season with practices in July, wearing masks the entire time including during workouts with the new strength and conditioning trainer, Zach Houghton. They practiced 4 days instead of 6 days a week and practices were shortened this pre-season.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, the varsity team’s game schedule has not changed much. The only real difference this season so far is wearing masks the entirety of practices and games. Along with that, some opponents request shorter games, best 2 of 3 sets instead of 3 of 5. However, recently  there was a game cancellation due to the team quarantining because a team member tested positive for COVID.

Even though the season seems to be mostly normal as of now, there is still uncertainty about if there will still be a full season. The team is trying to stay optimistic through these times of uncertainty.

“We are so grateful to be able to play,” senior and varsity captain Gracie Kiser said.

Even with new challenges this season, the varsity team’s future is bright.

“We have a really strong team this season, I think we’re going to continue being successful,” Kiser said. They have a good team this year, full of talented players offensively and defensively.

The team also has great chemistry, despite gaps due to the multitude of underclassmen on the team. “This is a special year because of the relationships on the team,” Kiser said. The team has a great rhythm on and off the court.

With the great mix of talent and good chemistry, the team is expected to go far this season if COVID allows the season to continue. “We have the talent, the attitude and the coaching; this is the year to bring a state title home again,” Kiser said.
