Cookie Companies Return to Tampa Prep

Cookie Companies are returning this year beginning on Feb. 15. The Cookie Company project, of the honors economics class, requires students to elect a CEO, assign bakers, media management, etc. The students then have to take out a loan and sell enough cookies to pay back the loan and hopefully make a profit. Cookie Companies have been a tradition at Tampa Prep for the past ten years, but with worries about COVID-19 safety, there was concern that there wouldn’t be companies this year.

However, Barry Parks, the teacher who oversees the project, was determined to have the annual sweets competition.

“Look at all the restaurants and places where you can get food in the area and most of them did not shut down. They’re making it work so, we are too,” said Parks.

A big concern was with COVID-19. Each company, “Caked.” and “The Cravory,” all have to abide by COVID-19 guidelines to ensure the safety of the team members and customers. With this, Parks has implemented new protocols for the companies.

“Everything should be socially distanced whether in commercials or whatever, hand sanitizing has to be used, gloves worn at all times, masks worn while baking, and contactless pickup and delivery is new this year,” said Parks.

Things will be a little different this year in terms of how students are able to buy and sell their goods. Each team is designing a website where you can buy the goods you want, which you can access through their instagram accounts (below).

“You can order through the instagram website domain and it’ll take you to one of our websites and through the website you can add to cart order and set a delivery time and the quantity of how much you want,” said senior Helena Noel, co-president of The Cravory.

Online orders will be available for pick-up in baskets around the school once proof of purchase is shown. But, there are other ways to buy goods at school. The Cravory says there might be extra baked goods that people can purchase with money in ziplock bags. Each company is also handing out free samples before they begin officially selling.

“For transactions—in person transactions—we have a credit card swiper attached to Ipads so basically it will be contactless,” said Jake Wallace, President of Caked.

While the usual four week selling period has been cut down to two and a half weeks due to the hybrid schedule, the Tampa Prep community is lucky to still be able to have them.

“Of all the things that have dampened the school year because of COVID, I wanted to do the cookie companies because I thought that it might be a bright spot in people’s days,” said Parks.
