Over the break one of our very own Terrapins reached yet another amazing milestone in Prep Athletics history. Chandler White Brooks, senior captain of this year’s Prep boys varsity basketball team, hit his 1000 career points in a tight win versus Robinson.
The athletics program, under the direction of Chris Lavoie, celebrated the moment when students returned to school, gifting White- Brooks with the ball marking his accomplishment.
Now playing in his fourth year for the team, White-Brooks was well aware of the possibility of him reaching this milestone. A longtime goal of his, he knew he had a good chance at breaking the marker if he put up the right numbers against Robinson.
“I knew going into [the game] I had to have about 17 points, but the game was so tight I wasn’t really focused on it,” he said.
Despite reaching the accomplishment mid game in their win over Robinson, White-Brooks noted there wasn’t much celebration as he and the team remained focused on the close game.
“I knew it was my 1000 point game, [but] honestly I wasn’t really thinking about it when I hit the basket because the game was really tight,” he said. “We couldn’t even call a timeout to acknowledge it right away and so I didn’t even know I hit it until after the game.”
After post-game celebrations White-Brooks reflected on the game and the basket. He was honored to be among the select group of players to reach the 1000 point feat since the program started. Receiving the honors from head coach, Joe Fenlon, White-Brooks noted a few words of congratulations and inspiration his coach had for him.
“He told me I just [have to] keep going. I have a chance to be in the top five as far as all time,” White-Brooks said. “He told me to just keep scoring the ball, keep winning.”
Even after accomplishing such an amazing individual award, White-Brook’s focus remains on the team and moving forward with their season.
“We can only go up from here. [We] can only win more games,” he said.
Fellow varsity teammate, CJ Davis, noted White-Brooks’ commitment to the team and was excited to see him finally hit his goal.
“We love Chandler, he’s a good player and a good leader. We knew he was going to get his points. He’s a natural scorer, and we love that about him. We put him on the floor to score,” Davis said.
Davis added the pride he and his teammates had in celebrating with Brooks after the game.
“You could tell it was a special moment for him, for him to accomplish that. He’s been striving for that goal since he’s been on the team so it was special,” he said.
A special moment for an amazing Terrapin student-athlete. With celebrations over though, White-Brooks and his team have brought back their focus to the season. Sitting at an impressive 16-2 record they’ll be looking to gun for a deep run in this year’s playoffs.
