The basketball team started their winter sports season with a resounding victory in their home opener on Wednesday, November 20, at 7 p.m. against the Jefferson Dragons. Weeks of preparation paid off as the team secured a 70-35 mercy-rule blowout.
Senior starter J’Londyn Bivens entered the game with both personal and team-wide goals. “I wanted to be a leader on the court and establish that early on,” Bivens said. “I also wanted to run our different offenses and create shots and opportunities for everyone on the team because I know that if we play as a team, we win.”
Bivens delivered on his goals, leading the team with 15 points and energizing the crowd with two dunks.
The excitement wasn’t limited to the court. Students in the stands were eager to see the team in action, with sophomore Daniyah Gay among those cheering on the squad.
“I was so excited to see the team play, and it was a bonus for me since my boyfriend was playing—and he had a great game,” Gay said.
After the win, the team celebrated the successful start to their season but remained focused on the challenges ahead. Head Coach Fenlon emphasized that this game was just the beginning.
“As a team, our goal is to work as a unit to succeed together this season,” Fenlon said. “This game was just a warmup for us, and we are training harder every single day to defeat all of our opponents this season.”
While the team is proud of their dominant performance, they know tougher matchups lie ahead. With a strong focus on teamwork and preparation, they aim to build on this early success as the season progresses.
