It’s funny. It’s dark. It’s chaotic, fun, and nothing like we’ve done before. That is what the cast has to say about Tampa Prep’s upcoming production of Little Shop of Horrors.
As the school year nears its end, seniors take the stage for their final performance at Tampa Prep. For actress Ellie White, the show holds special significance.
“Not only is this my last show of high school, but this musical is especially important to me because it’s unlike any role I’ve played this year,” White said.
Bland, who plays the eccentric and unhinged dentist Orin Scrivello, shared what makes the role exciting.
“He’s definitely one of the more over-the-top characters in the show—loud, cocky, and totally unhinged,” Bland said. “It’s been fun leaning into his ridiculousness.”
While the actors bring the story to life on stage, the behind-the-scenes crew plays a crucial role in making the production possible. Senior Ellie Shein, a member of the stage crew, described her experience.
“I help the cast by bringing the set to life,” Shein said. “I build the stage and adjust the lighting cues. It’s really fun watching everything come together and seeing the cast get more excited for opening night.”
As rehearsals continue, the cast works to connect with their characters.
“Obviously, I don’t relate to Orin’s cruelty, but playing a villain is always a blast,” Bland said. “I try to focus on his theatricality—he loves being the center of attention, which makes him fun to play.”
White shared how she immerses herself in her role.
“I like to stay in character from time to time at home,” she said. “I watch clips and videos of her to keep her persona and mannerisms fresh in my mind.”
Rehearsals not only refine the show but also build a sense of community among the cast.
“It’s been a lot of fun, especially working on comedic timing and character interactions,” Bland said. “The cast has great chemistry, and we’ve had plenty of laughs along the way.”
White agreed, emphasizing the connections formed during the process.
“The rehearsals are my favorite part of the whole experience,” she said. “I get to know the cast like they’re family. We work through struggles and celebrate successes together.”
With opening night approaching, the cast and crew are working tirelessly to make Little Shop of Horrors a memorable experience for audiences.
“It’s not your typical musical—it’s got dark comedy, creepy sci-fi elements, and some really catchy songs,” Bland said. “Aside from being a wild ride from start to finish, the show explores themes like greed and ambition spiraling out of control.”
Shein added, “Seeing how hard everyone has worked to make this happen for the audience makes the whole show even better.”
