Today marks a three-decade long tradition of grandparents enjoying the day with current Tampa Prep students. Started officially in 1987, Grandparents Day has grown to be one of the most thrilling days in the year. With hundreds of grandparents joining students in their regular classes, plenty of new experiences are shared as they get a hands-on look into the life of a terrapin.

Gail Whiting, a grandparent of senior and Editor-in-Chief Austin Whiting, was one of the first grandparents involved in the long-lasting tradition.

“The other schools were doing it and I decided we needed to have one too,” Gail said.

Even the TP Current staff had several grandparents visit the newsroom to see the process of developing a story. They learned about the newer aspects of multimedia journalism like how social media impacts how the newsroom works.

“You do involve a lot of facets like Twitter… I like seeing the real life of this.” Cindy Fields said. The grandparents get to see a new side of how their grandchildren work every day.

“You all are so much more advanced, more mature, more knowledgeable.” Patricia Diorio said.

Grandparents day once again is a day to remember as each grandparent got to go back to school and experience something they hadn’t felt for a long time. This will be an experience that they will remember forever.
