Senior to be Honored at Carnegie Hall

Rylee Johnson wins a gold key for her leather artwork.

At the beginning of March, senior Rylee Johnson found out news that would forever impact her career as an artist.

Johnson has been awarded a Gold Key at the national level from the Scholastic Arts and Writing contest for her hand-crafted leather piece. Johnson is the first Tampa Prep student to get this recognition at the national level.

“I can’t explain how surprised I was when Ms. Ashworth told me the big news,” Johnson said. “I am so grateful to those who have helped me along the way and could not be happier for the way things turned out.”

Johnson admits that working with leather can be a tough medium, but is still proud of the work she’s done as well as the work from her classmates working with leather. Johnson also attributes the success of her piece to working with art teacher and mentor Elle Ashworth.

“Ms. Ashworth is the one who first taught me about leather and is always pushing me to try my best. I can’t wait to experience Carnegie Hall with her in New York,” Johnson said.

Johnson and Ashworth will travel to New York City so Johnson can be honored at a ceremony at Carnegie Hall. Johnson has never been to Carnagie hall and is excited about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The National Ceremony will be held on June 8 at 6 p.m.
