When you think of a team, you think of a large group that works together to beat the other team. This isn’t the case for the Tampa Prep Girls Bowling team.

Victoria Solomon and Taylor George are the only two members of the female bowling team here at Tampa Prep. George has been bowling since freshman year, but Solomon has never competed on a bowling team before.

“It was my senior year and I wanted to try something new” said Solomon when asked as to why she joined the team.

In years prior, there have been smaller numbers of girls on the team than boys, but this is the first year that Tampa Prep has had less than 4 girls on the team since 2016.

“There are like seven to eight people on our team, but there are so many seniors who left that now the only people remaining are the people who were left behind, which was me and I recruited Victoria,” said Taylor George (‘20).

Due to the FHSAA 5 requiring at least 5 members for a team, George and Solomon are unable to compete as an individual Girls Bowling Team. The girls have been playing with the mens team, and plan to compete as individuals at districts.

When asked about how the team dynamic has changed due to the smaller team, George said, “The team is co-ed most of the time, and even when we had girls and boys teams we still support each other.”

The Tampa Prep Bowling team has used varying tactics of recruiting. This includes the Tampa Prep Bowling twitter and instagram.

George said that they have received a lot of interest from people but they cannot make the commitment. Solomon and George’s most successful form of recruiting has been through sit down meetings with potential teammates.

While the two are hoping to gain more teammates, they plan to compete at districts as individual representatives of the Tampa Prep Bowling Team. Both girls have had successes this year in past games.

“Even when we did have enough girls we [the entire team] still support each other” said George.

While the team may be divided by gender, George said that they support each other and their goals no matter what.
