New Netflix Rom-Com Really Is a Loser
Netflix’s new movie, Sierra Burgess is a Loser has sparked another wave of controversy due to insensitive comments. The supposed rom-com stars two of the hottest new actors on the scene, teen heart-throb Noah Centineo, who recently played Peter Kavinsky in the Netflix film To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Shannon Purser, who was our beloved Barb from the Netflix original series Stranger Things.
Together these two have created a whirlwind of press centered around the movie due to the film’s inclusion of controversial topics such as homophobia and body shaming as well as being all-around cringeworthy and totally predictable.
In the movie, Sierra Burgess is teenage girl in high school who is wicked smart and unapologetic, but her blatant personality is marred by the stereotypical mean girl, Veronica, who gives out her number to love interest Jamey as a joke to mess with Sierra. Eventually when Jamey texts the number he believes to be Veronica, he is slowly falling in love screen to screen with Sierra.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I know what your thinking, and yes your typical teenage rom-com is now based off the infamous term we call catfishing. Utterly predictable! Despite its highly predictable moments, the film is saved by small nuggets of comedy gold that somehow keep you watching through the scenes that seem unbearable.
During certain parts such as when Sierra runs into Jamey in the park as she picks up trash with her favorite counterpart, Dan. She pretends to be deaf so that she won’t have to speak to him, fearing that Jamey will recognize her voice. Little does she know that Jamey’s brother is actually hard-of-hearing. As well as making jokes upon being deaf, Dan makes a joke calling Sierra a hermaphrodite even though it may have been presented in a joking manner which is only one of many sexist jokes in the film. This is one of the many insensitive jokes that are presented.
Overall this movie could’ve been better. Even though the new teen heartthrob Noah Centineo tries to save the movies lackluster appeal. The movie would’ve been more appealing if more about the girls than just the melodramatic teenage drama over a guy. Would only recommend if you just need something to watch after a long, boring day and you can’t find anything else to watch on Netflix.
