On September 29, Saturday Night Live finally returned to television after a 5 month summer break with Adam Driver as host and Kanye ‘Ye’ West as musical guest.

Ariana Grande was scheduled to perform at the premiere but had to cancel due to “emotional reasons” following the death of ex-boyfriend Mac Miller.

In true typical SNL fashion, the episode began with a politically fueled cold open featuring Matt Damon as Brett Kavanaugh.

The Kavanaugh debate continued into Weekend Update with an appearance from Ruth Bader Ginsburg, portrayed by Kate McKinnon. On the portrayal of herself on SNL, even real life Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg finds it to be “marvelously funny” and was reported saying, “I liked the actress who portrayed me and I would like to say ‘Ginsburned!’ sometimes to my colleagues.”

SNL Head Writer Colin Jost continued Weekend Update with expressing his own opinion on the senators present at the Kavanaugh hearing, “If you’re not the right person to ask questions at a Senate Hearing, maybe you’re not the right person to be a senator.”

Host Adam Driver did an excellent job at his second hosting gig for the weekly sketch comedy show.

Driver was able to keep a straight face during his portrayal as an angry oil baron whose only want is to “crush your enemies!”

However the true controversy began after the show finished airing. Wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat, West went on a pro-Trump rant which included his plan to run for President in 2020.

Comedian Chris Rock was amongst those in the audience and recorded a majority of West’s speech. In the background you can hear Rock stifling laughter and exclaiming “Oh my god.”

In response to West’s behavior SNL Co-Head Writer, Michael Che posted on Instagram his thoughts, “And in regards to Kanye we stood there and listened to that [guy] lie and complain and s— on us and embarrass himself, only because THAT’S how dope the beat for Ghost Town is.”

Pete Davidson had a different view on the situation. On the following episode of SNL, Davidson appeared on Weekend Update to share his opinion while wearing a hat that resembled West’s “Make America Great Again” hat. However Davidson’s hat read “Make Kanye 2006 Again”.

Supposedly people wanted Che to talk about the ordeal but Davidson felt otherwise, “Che’s black but I’m crazy and we both know which side of Kanye is at the wheel right now,” Davidson said.

Davidson counteracted West’s comments by making it clear that “no one made fun of him for wearing that hat.” Davidson then showed a clip of West’s rant while zooming in on himself walking away, “but then I’m like I want a career so I leave.”

Despite West’s antics, it was a great start to an even greater season and fans look forward to what’s to come.
