The Season 3 premiere of cult TV Drama This is Us definitely lived up to its audience’s high expectations. But as usual, the show gave us more questions than answers.

Last Tuesday, Season 3 of This is Us premiered on NBC, featuring the triplets as they each celebrated their 38th birthdays. Like past seasons, the flash forwards raised daunting questions.

   Where is Kate?

Kate and Toby kicked the episode off with an emotional visit to an IVF clinic. As usual, Kate’s weight was a major obstacle and the doctor initially rejected her as a patient. Thanks to a birthday miracle, Kate and Toby were approved for the IVF with a daunting consequence-a 90% failure rate. Toby flushes his antidepressants down the toilet- a choice he definitely regrets later. Flashforward to future Toby in a dark room, alone, no wedding ring. Did the IVF work? In this season, I really hope that the producers give more light to the depths of Toby’s depression and the reasons behind it. Previously, his mental health was glossed over but I think the flash forward shows the severity of his depression finally being incorporated into the storyline.

What is the deal with Kevin and Zoe?

Beth quickly finds out they’re sleeping together or “knockin’ boots” as she describes. But instead of trying to keep player Kevin away from her cousin, she warns Kevin about her cousin’s dangerous man habits. Zoe has been known to eat men up and spit them out. Knowing Kevin, this probably won’t stop him from staying with Zoe but I’m scared for him. Broken hearted Kevin is not known to be a good look. Maybe in this season, Kevin can finally have a stable relationship unlike his usually toxic romances. I would love to say he deserves it, but I’m not sure that’s completely true. Despite my doubts, I want the producers to complete Kevin’s long awaited redemption arc and end his womanizing ways.

   Who is ‘Her?’

Randall and adult Tess are walking into an institution as Tess worries about seeing “Her.” Toby tells Randall over a phone call that he thinks “She” doesn’t want to see him. Fan theories point towards the “Her” possibly being Deja in prison. As we already know, Deja can have rebellious tendencies. Who knows where her and Randall’s relationship will be in the future? I doubt they will stay on positive terms after she is officially adopted. Male authority figures and Deja are not known to be compatible. Another theory suggests the “Her” is Kate, hence why Toby is nervous about seeing her. But why would Tess be worrying if her and Kate were never that close? I can’t wait for the writers to give us more hints about this woman’s identity. I just hope the mystery is addressed quicker than Jack’s death was. Hopefully we learn more as the season continues.
