Trippie Redd’s Newest Project Comes as Pleasant Surprise
The debut full length commercial album from one of rap’s biggest new wave artists, Trippie Redd, is definitely a banger.
Most recognizable from his mixtape A Love Letter To You, Trippie Redd is stylistically identified with the SoundCloud rap scene, notoriously referred to as “mumble rap”. His music is noted for its blending of Emo influences within an overall Trap sound. Trippie’s work stands out acutely from other new wave rappers as his vocals generally lack gratuitous auto-tone, creating a raw and intense sound.
Life’s A Trip particularly stands out from Trippie’s past projects because of how he fleshes out his concepts more. While A Love Letter To You often had an inconsistent and chaotic tone, Life’s A Trip offers a slightly more developed production with each song. However there are still exceptions to this development like the first song on the album, “Together” which had stained vocals and an obnoxious sound.
In spite of this, the album still produces intriguing songs like “Taking a Walk”, a song with smooth electric piano production and a deep atmosphere not traditionally seen from Trippie’s previous work.
Another highlight from the album was “Missing My Idols” which distinguishes itself from other tracks through verses like “I grab a bible, pray for my rivals, Dead on arrival, I swear this s— to me like a cycle, Bodies in piles, blood rivers resemble Niles.” The verse and overall track displays Trippie’s skilled use of wordplay, allusion, and homage to Lil Wayne’s flow.
Overall Life’s a Trip shows artistic growth from Trippie Redd all while continuing to showcase his skill at creating a rhapsodic vibe, particularly in songs like “Taking a Walk”, “Bird Sxxt!”, and “Bang!”. The collective album is definitely enjoyable, especially with the variation in vocal melody, production, and delivery.
With platinum hits like “Dark Knight Dummo” that are still visible on the charts it’s clear Trippie Redd’s music isn’t going anywhere soon. If you’re looking for a lively album to get your day going, Redd’s latest project will not disappoint.
